May 2011

We are ending our school year with a month that is packed with great activities!  On May 6 we had a Mothers' Day Tea for our special moms! The children were the waiters and waitresses and served their moms several flavors of tea and a delicious piece of strawberry cake.  The children presented a program of poems and songs for their moms.

William and Paul are moving to Charleston this summerWe are so sad to see them go! A swim party was held in their honor at the Brookstone Pool.  The second graders had a ball!

The students who completed all of the Second Grade SRA levels were rewarded with a trip to the Cougar Cafe for breakfast!  The students enjoyed time out of the classroom and a game of pool.

Last Friday our class enjoyed a field trip to AFLAC and lunch at Dinglewood. Thanks to Courtney, Paul, and Dan for arranging this wonderful trip for us!  The students will never forget that they were allowed to touch the back of the AFLAC letters and walk around the "catwalk" on the 14th floor!

The students who reached Neptune in our AR Solar System will have a dinner date with the teacher at a restaurant of their choice.  The students who reached this goal were Laurie Clare, Collins, Riley Kate, and Riley.  Way to go!!

We have had a fantastic year!  Students, you were a wonderful class! I hope you have a great summer!  Remember to read, read, read, and also practice your math facts!  I will miss all of you so much!  Please come back to see me often!  Love, Mrs. Pitts

                            KITE DAY!!!!!!!!

 April 2011

April has been a busy month for our class! We are continuing to learn our cursive letters and will soon be writing spelling words in cursive!  Our stories in reading have been about fossils and dinosaurs.  We made our own fossils in class this week!  The students have begun practicing for the "Country Fair" program which is Friday, April 29.  The shows will be at 10:00 and 11:15.  Please get your tickets before they sell out!  "Bidding for Brookstone" is Thursday night before the "Country Fair."  I hope you are planning to attend and bid on some of the wonderful treasures! We will have Easter centers this Wednesday at 1:00 and we hope you can come join us!  There will be no school on Good Friday. I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter weekend!

March 2011

We learned about and celebrated Mardi Gras in the classroom on March 8 by wearing beads, decorating masks, and eating a piece of the King's Cake with the little baby doll inside!

The students are busy decorating their can biography book reports!  They are decorating cans to resemble someone they admire and writing notecards about that person.  The students will read their reports to the class.

Grandparents' Day will be next Friday, March 18.  The students sent decorated invitations to their grandparents to tell them about this special day. We hope to see all of the grandparents on the 18th!

One of the best events in second grade will be on March 25 when we have Kite Day!  I would love to see the Fathers come share this fun activity with their children.  We will begin right flying after lunch., around 12:00.

February 2011

February is such a busy month!  On Feb. 2, we watched anxiously to see if the Groundhog saw his shadow.  We were so happy to hear that he did not and that Spring would be early!

On February 3, we celebrated Chinese New Year and learned about the Chinese culture with paper lanterns, chopsticks, dragons, the Chinese Zodiac, and fortune cookies.

On February 14, we celebrated Valentines's Day in a big way! The "Pitts' Post Office" was full of mailboxes that the students made.  We worked at 10 stations completing Valentine activities and finished the day by decorating cookies and exchanging valentines with our friends.

The students chose Blair Harrison (Brookstone's football coach) to be the recipient of our class Sunshine basket. We loved collecting things that we thought he would enjoy, such as candy bars and a popcorn bucket for the movies!  Coach Harrison visited our classroom and we presented him with the basket and cards.  We all hope that he will feel better soon!

GREAT NEWS!!!! SINCE RECEIVING HIS BASKET, COACH HARRISON HAS LEARNED HE IS CANCER FREE!!!!!

Parents, please remember to review telling time, counting change, and the addition and subtraction facts with your children often. The 10 books for the February "Book It" will be due on March 1.  All books must be chapter books. Other than being out for two snow days this week, our new year has been pretty quiet.  The children have settled down and are so much more mature after returning from the holidays! This is a great time of the year!

DECEMBER

It's amazing the things we have accomplished since Thanksgiving!  The children have been busy bees creating all kinds of Christmas crafts.  Thanks to all the people who sent in supplies and helped out.  We had a wonderful time seeing the Polar Express in 3D at the Infantry Museum.  It was a wonderful way to lead us into our holiday break.  I wish all of you a wonderful and restful few weeks, and look forward to seeing all of the children's smiling faces in 2011!!!

NOVEMBER

We have had a wonderful November!  The second grade play was outstanding.  After our two performances, we walked over to Brookside Glenn to sing a few of our songs.  The residents really enjoyed seeing and hearing the children.  We had a great time with our Thanksgiving stations.  Thanks to all those who helped and sent in supplies.  We are going to have a fun and busy couple of weeks leading up to the holiday break!

Happy Fall!

November will be another busy month for our students!

The second grade students will be practicing every day for the "Thanksgiving Play", which will be Friday, November 19, at 8:30.  Every child has a speaking part so please practice this with him/her. It is important that each child speak clearly, loudly, and with lots of expression!  The children will be dressed as Pilgrims and Indians and these costumes will be provided.  There will be more information to follow soon.

A new "Book It" for November has started.  The students will be adding parts to their turkeys this month.

Please continue to review with your child counting money to $5 and making change.  The subtraction facts tests will begin this week.  We will add 12 new problems every week for 3 weeks.  Please use the flashcards we made in class or some of the websites listed below to aid in helping your child memorize the facts.

Friday was PJ Day for the Lower School.  We enjoyed wearing pajamas and cooking a delicious breakfast in our classroom!

The Scholastic Book Fair is being held this week (Nov. 8-10) in the US Library.  Our class will visit the fair Tuesday at 12:00 if you would like to come help your child select some books. The students can also return Wednesday with a parent signed list to purchase books.
